What Docker is

Docker packages an application with everything it needs. This makes it portable between computers and easier to deploy.

Windows

Install Docker Desktop. You may need to enable WSL2. Keep in mind that Docker Desktop is free for personal use but has licence limits for larger companies; for a UF team it is fine.

Linux

Follow the official repository instructions for your distribution. On Ubuntu-based systems the convenience script works, but adding the repository manually is cleaner long-term.

First container

docker run hello-world

If that prints a greeting, Docker is working.
