WordPress.org vs WordPress.com, what's the difference?

They sound almost the same but work completely differently. Choose wrong and it could cost you thousands in unnecessary fees. We sort it out.

WordPress.com is a company (Automattic) that sells a cloud service based on WordPress. They host your site, but charge for it, limit what you can do, and effectively own the platform.

WordPress.org, the real WordPress

  • Completely free programvara, You download and install it. Costs SEK 0.
  • You choose hosting, Loopia, Binero, One.com or annat. 50–150 kr/mån.
  • Full control, Install any plugins you want. Change whatever you want. No restrictions.
  • You own everything, The data, the design, the content. You can move to another host any time.
  • Unlimited possibilities, WooCommerce for store, contact forms, booking system, newsletters, all available.

WordPress.com, the cloud service

  • Free plan available, But with ads, no custom domain, and limited design.
  • Betalplaner: 50–450 kr/mån, And you still don't get full freedom. Plugins require the most expensive plan (Business, SEK 350+/month).
  • Limited control, You can't install custom plugins on cheaper plans. Limited theme selection.
  • Hard to move, Moving away from WordPress.com can be tricky and often requires manual work.
  • Automattic decides, They can change terms, raise prices, or shut down features.

Cost comparison

Over 3 years, it looks like this:

  • WordPress.org + own hosting: SEK 100/month × 36 months = SEK 3,600 + one-time setup cost.
  • WordPress.com Business: SEK 350/month × 36 months = SEK 12,600, and you still own nothing.
Our recommendation: Always choose WordPress.org if you want control and ownership. WordPress.com can work for a simple personal blog, but for a business it's almost always more expensive and more limited.
