Start your own business without losing sleep

You don't have to quit tomorrow. Start on the side, test your idea, and grow at your own pace.

You've been thinking about it for a while

Maybe you sit on the bus home from work thinking "there has to be a better way". Maybe you already have people asking if you could do what you do, but for them instead. Maybe you dream about skipping the boss and making your own decisions.

You're not alone. Thousands of Swedes start their own business every year. Most of them started just like you, with an idea and a nagging feeling that it should work.

Start on the side

The smartest thing you can do is NOT quit your job. Start alongside your regular work. Test your idea on real customers. Get the first payments. Build up a buffer. And when it works, when you have proof that people will pay for what you offer, that's when you go all in.

Registering a sole proprietorship in Sweden is free and takes about 20 minutes. You can invoice the same day.

What do you actually need?

  • Tax registration — Register with the tax authority. Without it you can't invoice businesses.
  • Business account — Keep business money separate from personal. Every bank offers this.
  • Bookkeeping — Fortnox, Visma or a binder with receipts. Doesn't need to be complicated at the start.
  • A website — Five pages is enough. Who you are, what you do, how to reach you. That's all you need.
  • Invoicing tool — Fortnox, Visma, or just a template in Word. The main thing is that you send invoices.

You do NOT need

  • A perfect business plan (start with one page)
  • An office (the kitchen table works great)
  • A logo (that can come later)
  • Gold-embossed business cards (but regular ones are handy)
  • SEK 100,000 in starting capital (most service businesses start with close to zero)

Your first three customers

The first three customers come from your network. Tell everyone you know what you do. Offer an introductory price. Do a good job. Ask for a review. The first three customers lead to the next three.

It's not about having a perfect plan. It's about starting. Most successful entrepreneurs started with a half-finished idea and adjusted along the way. You learn more by doing than by planning.
